George Mackay Brown's writing is permeated by the layers of history and tradition in Orkney and in these eleven stories he mingles past and present – Neolithic man, Pict, Norseman and Scot – in tales that explore legend, life and the spiritual.

These included A Calendar of Love (), A Time to Keep (), Greenvoe (), Hawkfall (), and, notably, the novel Beside the Ocean of Time (), which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the Saltire Book of the Year. This collection of stories demonstrates the full range of George Mackay Brown's literary talent.

All of these sharply-etched fables deal with his perennial themes - love, violence, death and rebirth - and are set in an Orcadian world that spans myth and reality, past and present.

A selection of stories set in the Orkney Islands at various historical periods. Atmospheric, touched occasionally by the supernatural, these tales capture the hard lives of the fishermen and crofters, and explore the potential for loneliness in this remote place/5(5).
